Muchukunda Meets Krishna
— Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 10, Chapter 51 —
Dadi**: "Guddu, have you ever slept so long you missed something important?"
Guddu**: "Once I slept through my alarm and was late for school!"
Dadi**: "Imagine sleeping for thousands of years, then being woken up only to destroy an enemy! That's what happened to King Muchukunda."
Guddu**: "Thousands of years! Why was he sleeping so long?"
Dadi**: "Muchukunda was a great warrior-king of the Ikshvaku dynasty. He fought for the gods against demons for so long that when the battles ended, he was completely exhausted."
Guddu**: "He helped the gods?"
Dadi**: "For ages! When the gods' duty was fulfilled, they wanted to reward him. They offered any boon he wished. And you know what Muchukunda asked for?"
Guddu**: "What?"
Dadi**: "Sleep! Just peaceful, uninterrupted sleep. The gods granted it, with a special protection: anyone who disturbed his rest would be instantly burned to ashes by the fire of his gaze."
Guddu**: "So he could sleep safely!"
Dadi**: "For centuries he slept in a cave. Then one day, a Yavana king named Kalayavana was chasing Lord Krishna through Mathura."
Guddu**: "Why was he chasing Krishna?"
Dadi**: "He wanted to fight the famous dark-skinned warrior everyone talked about. But Krishna, instead of fighting, ran! He led Kalayavana into the very cave where Muchukunda slept."
Guddu**: "It was a trap!"
Dadi**: "Kalayavana entered the dark cave. He couldn't see Krishna anywhere. But he saw a man sleeping and thought, 'Aha! This is Krishna pretending to be asleep!' He kicked the sleeping figure to wake him."
Guddu**: "He kicked Muchukunda!"
Dadi**: "Muchukunda's eyes opened, filled with rage. One glance - and Kalayavana burst into flames from within, reduced to ashes in an instant."
Guddu**: "The boon worked!"
Dadi**: "Then Krishna appeared in all his divine glory - dark blue complexion, yellow silk, the Kaustubha gem glowing on his chest. Muchukunda was astonished."
Guddu**: "Did he know it was God?"
Dadi**: "He felt it immediately. He asked Krishna what he should wish for now. Krishna offered him any blessing - kingdoms, pleasures, anything."
Guddu**: "What did he want?"
Dadi**: "After sleeping through ages, after seeing his own power destroy a man, Muchukunda wanted only one thing: devotion to Krishna's lotus feet. He rejected all worldly rewards."
Guddu**: "He chose God over everything!"
Dada**: "Krishna was pleased! He blessed Muchukunda: 'You will wander the earth as my devotee. In your next birth, you will become a righteous Brahmin and attain complete liberation.'"
Guddu**: "What happened when he left the cave?"
Dadi**: "He noticed something strange - all the creatures and plants had become smaller. A new age had begun while he slept! He retired to the Himalayas to meditate, constantly remembering Krishna."
Guddu**: "He woke up in a different time!"
Dadi**: "Sometimes we sleep through great changes. But it's never too late to turn toward the Divine. Muchukunda lost centuries, but he gained eternity. Sleep now, beta - but don't sleep through life!"
