Sevapanthi Order - Legacy of Bhai Kanhaiya

Sikh History/Tradition

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, if you were in a battle and saw an enemy soldier injured and dying of thirst, would you give him water?"

Guddu: "Hmm... he's an enemy, so probably not?"

Dadi: "That's what most people think. But tonight I'll tell you about Bhai Kanhaiya, whose answer shocked everyone - and changed Sikh history forever."

Guddu: "What did he do?"

Dadi: "It was the Battle of Anandpur, one of the fiercest battles the Sikhs ever fought. The city was under siege - food and water were scarce. Every drop of water was precious."

Guddu: "What was Bhai Kanhaiya's job?"

Dadi: "He carried a mashak - a leather water pouch - across the battlefield, giving water to wounded soldiers. But here's what made people furious: he gave water to EVERYONE. Sikhs and Mughals alike."

Guddu: "Even the enemy?!"

Dadi: "Even the enemy. The Sikh warriors were outraged. "The city is under siege! We barely have water for ourselves! And he's giving it to the Mughals who will recover and fight against us again!""

Guddu: "Did they punish him?"

Dadi: "They brought him before Guru Gobind Singh himself. The complaints were serious - this was wartime, and he was accused of helping the enemy."

Guddu: "What did the Guru ask?"

Dadi: "The Guru asked, "These Sikhs say you feed water to the enemy and they recover to fight again. Is this true?""

Guddu: "What did Bhai Kanhaiya say?"

Dadi: "His answer is remembered to this day. He said: "Yes, my Guru, what they say is true. However, I saw no Mughals or Sikhs on the battlefield. All I saw were people. All I saw were human beings.""

Guddu: "He saw everyone as the same?"

Dadi: "He saw the divine light in every person - enemy or friend. The same God who lived in Sikhs lived in Mughals too."

Guddu: "Was the Guru angry?"

Dadi: "The opposite! Guru Gobind Singh was deeply pleased. He said Bhai Kanhaiya had truly understood the message of Gurbani - to treat all God's people equally."

Guddu: "He wasn't punished?"

Dadi: "He was blessed! The Guru gave him medicinal balm to treat wounds along with the water. He told Kanhaiya to continue his compassionate work. And he prophesied that after Kanhaiya, there would be a Sikh order dedicated to such service."

Guddu: "Did that order form?"

Dadi: "Yes! It's called the Sevapanthi Order - the "fellowship of service." When their leaders are appointed, they receive a broom and a bowl - the broom for cleanliness, the bowl for service to others."

Guddu: "What happened to Bhai Kanhaiya after the war?"

Dadi: "Something amazing. One of his disciples was Noor Shah - an Afghan soldier who had been among the enemy! On the battlefield, this man had received water from Bhai Kanhaiya even though they were fighting on opposite sides. He was so moved that he later became Kanhaiya's devoted follower."

Guddu: "An enemy became a disciple!"

Dadi: "That's the power of compassion, beta. Noor Shah established his own center for service, inspired by the man who had shown him kindness when he was wounded and helpless."

Guddu: "What did the Sevapanthis do over the years?"

Dadi: "They prepared the special ink used to write manuscripts of Sikh scriptures before printing existed. They supervised construction of the langar hall at the Golden Temple. They served humanity without distinction."

Guddu: "Dadi, would I have the courage to give water to an enemy?"

Dadi: "I don't know, beta. It's easy to talk about compassion when we're comfortable. In the middle of a battle, with people dying around you, with scarce water and hungry soldiers? That's when it gets hard."

Guddu: "But Bhai Kanhaiya did it."

Dadi: "Because he didn't see enemies. He saw God. When someone is dying of thirst, their uniform doesn't matter. Their flag doesn't matter. They're a child of the divine, suffering."

Guddu: "I want to remember that."

Dadi: "Remember Bhai Kanhaiya when you're tempted to be unkind to someone different from you. Remember that on the battlefield of life, we're all just human beings. We all get thirsty. We all need help sometimes. And the one who helps everyone - that one has truly understood what it means to serve God."
