The Saint with Two Bodies

Autobiography of a Yogi, Chapter 3

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, have you ever wished you could be in two places at once?"

Guddu: "All the time, Dadi! Like when there's a cricket match and a birthday party on the same day!"

Dadi: "*smiling* Tonight I'll tell you about a saint who actually could do this - Swami Pranabananda, who could appear in two places simultaneously!"

Guddu: "Two bodies at the same time? That's impossible!"

Dadi: "Young Yogananda thought so too. When he was twelve years old, he traveled to Benares with letters of introduction from his father. One letter was for Swami Pranabananda."

Guddu: "Was he a famous saint?"

Dadi: "He was known for his deep spirituality. When young Yogananda arrived at the swami's house, something strange happened. Before he could even introduce himself, the saint said, "Baba anand!" - meaning "bliss to my dear one." Then he added, "You are Bhagabati's son.""

Guddu: "He knew without being told?"

Dadi: "He knew many things. The swami told Yogananda that he received two pensions - one from the railroad where he used to work, and another, more important one: "A pension of fathomless peace - a reward for many years of deep meditation.""

Guddu: "That's a nice way to describe it!"

Dadi: "Now comes the miraculous part. Yogananda needed to meet a man named Kedar Nath Babu. He hadn't told anyone about this. But while they were talking, the swami suddenly fell into a deep meditation..."

Guddu: "And?"

Dadi: "And within thirty minutes, Kedar Nath Babu walked through the door! No messenger had been sent. No phone call made. Yet he arrived at exactly the right moment!"

Guddu: "How did he know to come?"

Dadi: "Kedar Nath told an amazing story. He said he had been at the Ganges river, and Swami Pranabananda had walked beside him there, talking with him! The swami had directed him to come to this house."

Guddu: "But wait - the swami was sitting in the house the whole time with Yogananda!"

Dadi: "Exactly! The swami had been in two places at once. While his body sat meditating in the room, another form of him walked by the Ganges and brought Kedar Nath to the house."

Guddu: "That's... that's like magic!"

Dadi: "When they asked the swami about this miracle, he explained: "The subtle unity of the world is not hidden from true yogis. I can instantly see and speak with my disciples in distant places. They too can transcend the obstacles of physical matter.""

Guddu: "So he wasn't just imagining it?"

Dadi: "Kedar Nath had walked and talked with him - it was completely real. For great yogis, the body is not a prison. They learn to work beyond its limitations."

Guddu: "How did he learn to do this?"

Dadi: "Through years of dedicated practice. He told Yogananda that he used to meditate for eight hours every night while still working at his railroad job. Can you imagine, beta? Working all day, then meditating all night!"

Guddu: "He must have been very tired!"

Dadi: "Actually, deep meditation can be more refreshing than sleep. He said he experienced tremendous spiritual perceptions, but still felt separated from the ultimate truth. So he begged his own guru, Lahiri Mahasaya, for help."

Guddu: "Did the guru help?"

Dadi: "Lahiri Mahasaya placed his hand on the disciple's head and promised to intercede with the Divine. That very night, during meditation, Swami Pranabananda achieved permanent union with God. From that moment, his abilities were limitless."

Guddu: "That's like getting superpowers from God!"

Dadi: "But remember, beta - he didn't seek powers. He sought God. The powers came as a side effect of his devotion. That's always how it works for true saints. They want truth, and miracles follow naturally."

Guddu: "Dadi, can anyone learn to be in two places?"

Dadi: "The ability comes from years of dedicated spiritual practice. But here's the real lesson: while most of us can't split our physical body, we can extend our presence through love. When you think lovingly of someone far away, part of you is with them. When you pray for someone, your good wishes reach them."

Guddu: "So love is like being in two places?"

Dadi: "In a way, yes. The swami's miracle was dramatic, but the principle behind it is one we all experience. Love transcends distance. Prayers cross oceans. Thoughts connect hearts. We're all more connected than we realize."

Guddu: "I'll think of you when I'm at school, Dadi. Part of me will be with you!"

Dadi: "*hugging him* And part of me is always with you, mera bachcha. That's how love works. Now sleep, and may you dream of the wonders that devotion can unlock."
