The Mice and the Elephants

Panchatantra

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu beta, do you think mice and elephants could ever be friends?"

Guddu: "Mice and elephants? But elephants are huge and mice are tiny! What could a mouse ever do for an elephant?"

Dadi: "*smiling mysteriously* That's exactly what the king of elephants thought. Let me tell you what happened..."

Guddu: "Tell me, tell me!"

Dadi: "Long ago, a terrible earthquake destroyed a village. All the people left to find new homes. But you know who moved in? Thousands and thousands of mice! The broken houses became their perfect little homes."

Guddu: "A whole village of mice! That's so cool!"

Dadi: "The mice were very happy there. But nearby, there was a beautiful lake where a herd of elephants came every day to drink water and bathe. And the path they took? It went right through the mice village!"

Guddu: "Oh no... the elephants stepped on the mice?"

Dadi: "Every day, thousands of mice were crushed under those giant feet. The elephants didn't mean any harm - they didn't even notice! But for the mice, it was a disaster."

Guddu: "Poor mice! What did they do?"

Dadi: "The king of mice called a meeting. They decided someone must talk to the king of elephants. So the tiny mouse king gathered all his courage and went to meet the mighty elephant king."

Guddu: "That must have been scary!"

Dadi: "Very scary, beta. But he spoke bravely: "Your Majesty, we live in the ruined village that you pass through. Every day, many of my subjects are trampled under your feet. Please, could you take a different route to the lake? If you do this kindness, we promise to help you when you need us.""

Guddu: "What did the elephant king say?"

Dadi: "*chuckling* He laughed! "O little king of mice, what help could tiny creatures like you ever give to mighty elephants like us?" But he was kind at heart. He said, "However, I will honor your request. From today, we will take a different path.""

Guddu: "That was nice of him!"

Dadi: "The mice were so relieved! They celebrated and lived peacefully in their village. But then... months later, something terrible happened. Elephant hunters came to the jungle with huge nets."

Guddu: "*gasping* They caught the elephants?"

Dadi: "Many elephants, including their king, got tangled in the strong nets. They struggled and struggled, but the more they pulled, the tighter the nets became. They were trapped."

Guddu: "What about the mice? Did they help?"

Dadi: "The elephant king remembered the mouse king's promise! One elephant who had escaped ran to the mice village and told them what happened."

Guddu: "And then?"

Dadi: "The mouse king immediately called all his mice. "Now is the time to repay the elephants' kindness! Follow me!" Thousands of mice rushed to where the elephants were trapped."

Guddu: "But what could little mice do against big nets?"

Dadi: "They did what only mice can do - they nibbled! With their sharp little teeth, they chewed through the ropes. One mouse couldn't do much, but thousands of mice? In no time, all the nets were cut loose!"

Guddu: "*clapping* They freed the elephants!"

Dadi: "The elephants broke free, one by one. The elephant king bowed his massive head to the tiny mouse king. "I was foolish to laugh at your offer of help. Today you have saved us all. Forgive my pride.""

Guddu: "And they became friends?"

Dadi: "The best of friends! The elephants and mice helped each other for generations after that."

Guddu: "Dadi, the moral is that even small people can help big people, right?"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta! Never underestimate anyone because of their size. Everyone has their own special abilities. The elephants had strength, the mice had sharp teeth and numbers."

Guddu: "Like how I helped Papa fix his computer even though I'm small!"

Dadi: "*hugging him* Perfect example! Sometimes children know things adults don't. Sometimes the quietest person has the best idea. Always be humble, and never refuse help from anyone - you never know who might save you someday."

Guddu: "I'll remember, Dadi. A friend in need is a friend indeed!"

Dadi: "My wise little mouse! Now let's get you to sleep. Sweet dreams, mera bachcha."
