The Tortoise and the Geese
β Panchatantra β
Dadi: "Guddu, can you keep a secret?"
Guddu: "Sometimes... I try!"
Dadi: "Tonight's story is about a tortoise who could do many things - but keeping quiet was not one of them."
Guddu: "A tortoise who talked too much?"
Dadi: "Yes! His name was Kambugriva, and he lived in a beautiful pond with two best friends - geese named Sankata and Vikata. For many years, they were happy together."
Guddu: "That sounds lovely!"
Dadi: "It was. But then a terrible drought came. No rain fell for months and months. The pond started drying up. Rivers disappeared. All the birds and animals were suffering."
Guddu: "What did they do?"
Dadi: "The three friends decided they had to find a new home - a lake far away that still had water. The geese could fly there easily, but the tortoise?"
Guddu: "Tortoises can't fly!"
Dadi: "Exactly. And walking that far would take forever. So the geese came up with a clever plan. They found a strong stick. The tortoise would bite the middle and hold on tight, while each goose held one end in their beak."
Guddu: "They would carry him through the air!"
Dadi: "But there was one absolutely essential rule. The tortoise must NOT open his mouth during the entire flight. If he did, he would fall."
Guddu: "Just keep his mouth shut?"
Dadi: "Simple, right? But the geese knew their friend. He was very, very talkative. It would be hard for him. They warned him many times: "Whatever happens, don't speak!""
Guddu: "Did the tortoise promise?"
Dadi: "He swore he wouldn't say a word. So they began their journey, flying higher and higher, over hills and valleys, over fields and forests."
Guddu: "That must have been amazing!"
Dadi: "It was! Until they flew over a town. The people below looked up and saw an incredible sight - two geese carrying a tortoise on a stick through the sky!"
Guddu: "They must have been so surprised!"
Dadi: "They started laughing, pointing, clapping, shouting at the unusual scene. The noise reached the tortoise's ears."
Guddu: "Oh no..."
Dadi: "The tortoise got annoyed. He thought, "Why are these people making fun of me? I should say something!" Unable to control himself, he opened his mouth to shout back..."
Guddu: "And he fell!"
Dadi: "The moment he opened his mouth, he lost his grip on the stick and plummeted down. His talkative nature caused his death."
Guddu: "That's so sad! If he had just stayed quiet..."
Dadi: "If he had just controlled his impulse for one journey. The moral is: Silence is the fence around wisdom. One should speak only at the right moment."
Guddu: "But Dadi, speaking isn't bad!"
Dadi: "Speaking isn't bad. But speaking at the wrong time, in the wrong way, when you should stay silent - that can be dangerous. The tortoise wasn't being asked to never speak again, just to stay quiet during one important journey."
Guddu: "Like how I shouldn't talk during an exam?"
Dadi: "Perfect example! There's a time to talk and a time to be quiet. The wise person knows the difference. The tortoise knew the rule - he just couldn't follow it."
Guddu: "Self-control is hard sometimes."
Dadi: "Very hard. But it's one of the most valuable skills you can develop. Can you imagine if the tortoise had just taken a deep breath and thought, "I can respond to those people later, after I'm safely on the ground"?"
Guddu: "He would have made it to the new lake!"
Dadi: "And lived happily with his friends. Instead, a moment's impulse cost him everything. The people's laughter wasn't worth dying for."
Guddu: "I'll try to think before I speak, Dadi."
Dadi: "That's the practice, beta. When you feel the urge to say something, pause for just one breath. Ask yourself: "Is this the right time? Is this helpful?" That one breath can save you from so much trouble."
Guddu: "One breath before speaking."
Dadi: "*kissing his forehead* Simple but powerful. Now sleep, mera bachcha. May you have the wisdom to know when to speak and when to stay silent."
Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi! ...I'm practicing being quiet right now!"
Dadi: "*laughing softly* Sweet dreams, my wise little one."
