Balarama - The White Serpents Sojourn

Bhagavata Purana, Book 10; Mahabharata; Harivamsa

Dadi: "Beta, did I tell you that Balarama was originally a cosmic serpent?"

Guddu: "Yes, Dadi! Ananta Shesha who holds up the universe!"

Dadi: "Good memory! Today let me tell you more about his journey - from cosmic serpent to human brother and back again."

Guddu: "Back again?"

Dadi: "Yes, beta. The story of Balarama is a complete circle - from divine serpent, to human, and finally returning to his original form."

Guddu: "Tell me more about Shesha first!"

Dadi: "Shesha, also called Ananta, is the king of all serpents - a Nagaraja. The Puranas describe him as a divine being of creation itself. He has a thousand hoods, and from all his mouths, he constantly sings praises of Lord Vishnu."

Guddu: "That must be beautiful music!"

Dadi: "The most beautiful, beta. And while he sings, he holds all the planets of the universe on those thousand hoods. Imagine - every star, every world, every galaxy resting on this cosmic serpent while he floats on the ocean of milk!"

Guddu: "Why did he want to leave such an important job?"

Dadi: "Because his love for Vishnu was so great that wherever Vishnu went, Shesha wanted to follow. When Vishnu planned to incarnate as Krishna on Earth, Shesha begged to come too."

Guddu: "So he became Balarama."

Dadi: "The scriptures tell us that Vishnu gave instructions to his creative power, Yogamaya: "The whole of Shesha, which is my abode, will become an embryo in Devaki's womb, which you shall then move to Rohini's womb.""

Guddu: "So the transfer was planned from the beginning!"

Dadi: "Exactly. Some scriptures say that Krishna was created from black hair pulled from Vishnu's body, and Balarama from white hair. Black Krishna, white Balarama - like night and day, like monsoon clouds and moonlight."

Guddu: "What was Balarama like growing up?"

Dadi: "He was a pillar of strength, beta. While Krishna was charming everyone with his flute and dancing with the gopis, Balarama was wrestling, training with weapons, protecting the community. He defeated many demons alongside his brother."

Guddu: "Were there any demons only Balarama defeated?"

Dadi: "Yes! The demon Dhenukasura - a massive donkey-demon - was terrorizing a palm forest. Balarama grabbed him by the hind legs, swung him around and around, and hurled him into a palm tree so hard that both the demon and the tree fell!"

Guddu: "Such strength!"

Dadi: "Serpent strength, beta. Remember, this was Shesha - the foundation of the universe - in human form."

Guddu: "What happened during the great war?"

Dadi: "This is interesting, beta. When the Mahabharata war between Pandavas and Kauravas was about to begin, Balarama refused to fight for either side."

Guddu: "Why?"

Dadi: "He had taught mace fighting to both Bhima of the Pandavas and Duryodhana of the Kauravas. How could he fight against his own students? While Krishna chose to help the Pandavas, Balarama went on pilgrimage instead."

Guddu: "He missed the whole war?"

Dadi: "He returned at the very end, just in time to see Bhima and Duryodhana - his two students - fighting their final mace duel. When Bhima struck Duryodhana with an illegal blow, Balarama was so angry he wanted to kill Bhima!"

Guddu: "His student was cheated!"

Dadi: "Only Krishna's wisdom stopped him. Balarama walked away grieving, having lost a beloved student, having watched an entire era destroy itself."

Guddu: "And then came the end."

Dadi: "After the great war, after the destruction of the Yadava clan, after witnessing so much loss, Balarama knew his time on Earth was complete. He sat in deep meditation by the ocean near Somnath."

Guddu: "What happened?"

Dadi: "As his soul prepared to leave his human body, a great white serpent emerged from his mouth - Shesha returning to his original form! The serpent moved toward the ocean, toward the cosmic waters, returning to Patala, the netherworld."

Guddu: "He went home!"

Dadi: "The local people near the Somnath Temple still point to a cave where they say the white serpent entered on his way back to his eternal abode. The cosmic serpent had completed his earthly journey."

Guddu: "What does this teach us, Dadi?"

Dadi: "That we all have a journey, beta - a beginning and an end. Balarama came from the divine realm, lived fully as a human brother and protector, and returned to his original nature. Along the way, he showed us what true loyalty looks like."

Guddu: "Loyalty to Krishna!"

Dadi: "And to everyone he cared about. Even though Balarama was incredibly powerful - literally holding the universe in his true form - he was humble enough to be a brother, a teacher, a friend. Power does not have to mean pride."

Guddu: "I like that he came back to Earth just to be with Krishna."

Dadi: "That is devotion, beta. When you love someone, you want to be wherever they are, doing whatever you can to help. Shesha could have stayed in the cosmic realm, floating on milk, singing praises. Instead, he chose to walk dusty roads, fight demons, and share meals with cowherds - because his beloved Lord was there."

Guddu: "Love made him want to be human!"

Dadi: "Love makes us do extraordinary things, beta. And when our earthly work is done, we return to where we came from - changed by the experience, enriched by the love we shared."
