Bhima and Hanuman

Mahabharata, Vana Parva

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Beta Guddu, do you know that Bhima - the mighty Pandava warrior - had a brother he had never met?"

Guddu: "A brother? I thought Bhima only had brothers from the same family - Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva!"

Dadi: "Those were his earthly brothers. But Bhima was the son of Vayu, the wind god. And do you know who else was a son of Vayu?"

Guddu: "Who?"

Dadi: "Hanuman! The mighty monkey god who helped Lord Rama. Bhima and Hanuman were divine brothers - both sons of the wind!"

Guddu: "Did they ever meet?"

Dadi: "Let me tell you the story! During the Pandavas' twelve years of exile in the forest, Draupadi once found a beautiful lotus flower. She loved it so much that she asked Bhima to find more."

Guddu: "That seems easy for someone so strong!"

Dadi: "Bhima thought so too! He set off into the deep Gandhamadana forest, making a great noise as he went - uprooting trees, scaring animals, showing off his strength. He was very proud of his power."

Guddu: "Was someone watching him?"

Dadi: "Yes! Hanuman, who lived in that forest, heard all the commotion. He knew Bhima was coming, and he decided to teach his younger brother a lesson in humility."

Guddu: "What did he do?"

Dadi: "Hanuman transformed into a very old, tired-looking monkey. He stretched himself across the narrow path among the plantain trees and pretended to sleep, blocking Bhima's way."

Guddu: "What did Bhima do?"

Dadi: "Bhima roared, "Move, old monkey! Get out of my path!""

Guddu: "That's rude!"

Dadi: "Very rude. Hanuman, still pretending to be a weak old monkey, said, "I'm sick and tired, noble sir. I cannot move. My tail is blocking your path - why don't you just move it aside?""

Guddu: "That seems easy for strong Bhima!"

Dadi: "That's what Bhima thought! He reached down with one hand to push the tail aside. It didn't budge. He tried with both hands. Nothing. He pulled, pushed, strained with all his legendary strength - the strength that could fight demons and lift mountains!"

Guddu: "He couldn't move a monkey's tail?"

Dadi: "Not an inch! Bhima was the strongest man in the world, and he couldn't lift this old monkey's tail. His eyes grew wide. His face turned red. Sweat poured down."

Guddu: "What was happening?"

Dadi: "Bhima suddenly realized - this was no ordinary monkey. He fell to his knees and asked respectfully, "Who are you? You cannot be a normal creature. Please reveal yourself.""

Guddu: "What did Hanuman do?"

Dadi: "He revealed his true form - mighty, radiant, glowing with divine power. Bhima recognized him immediately. "Hanuman! The great devotee of Lord Rama! You are my brother!""

Guddu: "That must have been emotional!"

Dadi: "They embraced each other with tears of joy. Hanuman said, "Little brother, I had to humble you. You were crashing through the forest like you owned it, proud of your strength. But true strength isn't about breaking trees and scaring animals.""

Guddu: "What is true strength?"

Dadi: "Hanuman explained: "I could have crossed the ocean to Lanka with one leap, but I waited for Lord Rama's command. I could have destroyed Ravana's army alone, but I served as a humble messenger. True strength is strength used with humility, in service of something greater.""

Guddu: "Did Hanuman give Bhima anything?"

Dadi: "A beautiful blessing! Hanuman said, "In your coming war against the Kauravas, I will sit on Arjuna's chariot flag. When I roar, your enemies will lose their courage. My presence will protect you all.""

Guddu: "So Hanuman actually helped in the Mahabharata war?"

Dadi: "Yes! That's why Arjuna's flag had a monkey emblem. Hanuman's thunderous roar from that flag struck terror into the hearts of the Kaurava soldiers."

Guddu: "But wait - if Bhima was so strong, why couldn't he lift Hanuman's tail?"

Dadi: "Because Hanuman wasn't just any being. He was older, wiser, and more devoted. His strength came from his surrender to God. Bhima's strength came from his own pride. When divine strength meets human pride, human pride always loses."

Guddu: "What does this story teach us, Dadi?"

Dadi: "So many things! First, no matter how strong or talented you are, there's always someone greater - stay humble. Second, elders deserve respect - Bhima was rude at first, but learned to bow. Third, true power serves others - Hanuman could destroy anyone, but he chose to serve. Fourth, family connections are divine - Bhima and Hanuman had never met, but their bond as spiritual brothers was real. And finally, pride comes before a fall - Bhima's arrogance led to his humiliation, but from that humiliation came a beautiful blessing."

Guddu: "I'll try not to be arrogant about things I'm good at!"

Dadi: "Wonderful, beta! Remember - whenever you feel proud of your abilities, imagine Hanuman's tail lying across your path. Can you move it? Only with humility does true strength reveal itself."
