Princess Malli - The Female Tirthankara

Jain tradition (Svetambara)

Dadi**: Guddu beta, did you know that among the 24 great spiritual teachers of Jainism, one was a woman?

Guddu**: A woman? I thought all the Tirthankaras were men!

Dadi**: Twenty-three were, but the nineteenth Tirthankara was Princess Mallinath - and her story teaches something profound about karma, beauty, and the nature of the soul.

Guddu**: Tell me, Dadi!

Dadi**: It all started in a previous life. Long ago, there was a king named Mahabal who had six close friends. All seven kings decided to renounce their kingdoms and become monks together.

Guddu**: That's nice - friends on the spiritual path together!

Dadi**: They vowed to practice equally, supporting each other. But Mahabal had a secret. While the others slept, he would perform extra fasting and meditation, pretending to be unwell during the day.

Guddu**: He cheated?

Dadi**: He wanted to be ahead of his friends. This deception was wrong, and karma took note. When he died, he was reborn... as a female.

Guddu**: Being born female was a punishment?

Dadi**: In Jain belief, the soul has no gender. But the deception created karma that resulted in a female birth. However - and this is important - his sincere spiritual intentions also meant he would become a Tirthankara!

Guddu**: So he became Princess Mallinath?

Dadi**: Yes! She was born to King Kumbh and Queen Prabhavati of Mithila. She was extraordinarily beautiful - so beautiful that six kings from faraway lands heard of her and came to ask for her hand in marriage.

Guddu**: Six kings wanted to marry her!

Dadi**: These six kings were the rebirths of Mahabal's six friends from the previous life! Karma had brought them all together again, but in a different form.

Guddu**: What did Mallinath do?

Dadi**: She didn't want to marry anyone - she wanted to pursue enlightenment. But instead of just refusing, she decided to teach all six kings a powerful lesson.

Guddu**: What lesson?

Dadi**: She had craftsmen create a life-sized golden statue that looked exactly like her - incredibly beautiful. Then she placed rotting food inside it and sealed it shut.

Guddu**: Eww! Why?

Dadi**: She invited all six kings to her court. They gazed at the beautiful golden statue with wonder. Then she opened it, and the stench of decay poured out.

Guddu**: That must have been disgusting!

Dadi**: As the kings recoiled, Mallinath spoke: "You are attracted to my body. But what is this body? A container for food that enters and rots. It is made of bones, flesh, and blood. Why chase something that will one day smell worse than this statue?"

Guddu**: She was saying beauty is an illusion?

Dadi**: Exactly! The kings understood. Their attraction to her was based on something temporary and misleading. In that moment, they also remembered their previous lives and their old friendship.

Guddu**: They remembered being friends before?

Dadi**: The wisdom awakened their memories! All six kings, along with Princess Mallinath, renounced their kingdoms and became monks and nuns. Eventually, Mallinath achieved complete enlightenment.

Guddu**: So a woman became a Tirthankara!

Dadi**: One of the great wonders of the spiritual world, Jain texts say. It proves that the soul is beyond gender. Male or female doesn't matter - what matters is the purity of spiritual practice.

Guddu**: But Dadi, did she get punished for cheating in the previous life, or rewarded for being spiritual?

Dadi**: Both! Karma is very precise. The cheating caused a female birth when he wanted to be ahead. But the sincere spirituality led to becoming a Tirthankara. Every action has its consequence.

Guddu**: So you can't trick karma?

Dadi**: Never! Even good intentions don't cancel out bad actions. And even bad actions don't cancel out good ones. Everything is accounted for precisely. That's why honest, sincere effort is the only path.

Guddu**: I'll remember that, Dadi.

Dadi**: Good! And remember Mallinath's lesson - don't be fooled by beautiful outsides. What's within matters far more. Goodnight, beta!

Guddu**: Goodnight, Dadi!
