Urvashi and Pururavas - Divine Love
— Amar Chitra Katha —
Dadi: "Guddu, you know how Lakshmana went to the forest with Rama for fourteen years?"
Guddu: "Yes, he was so loyal to his brother!"
Dadi: "But did you know he made a vow to stay awake for all fourteen years? And that his wife Urmila slept for him?"
Guddu: "Slept for him? How is that possible?"
Dadi: "When Lakshmana decided to accompany Rama and Sita into exile, he made an extraordinary promise: he would never sleep, so he could guard them day and night."
Guddu: "Fourteen years without sleep?"
Dadi: "On the first night, the Goddess of Sleep - Nidra Devi - came to Lakshmana. She said, "I must visit everyone. I cannot overlook you for fourteen years. The laws of nature demand balance.""
Guddu: "What did Lakshmana say?"
Dadi: ""Go to my wife Urmila," he said. "Ask her to sleep my share of sleep.""
Guddu: "And Urmila agreed?"
Dadi: "Without hesitation! She said, "Give me my husband's share of sleep so he can stay awake and serve Rama." From that day, Urmila slept more than sixteen hours every day."
Guddu: "That's most of the day!"
Dadi: "While Lakshmana faced dangers in the forest, fought demons, and guarded Ram and Sita, Urmila lay dreaming in the palace. People passed by her chambers wondering why she slept so much."
Guddu: "Didn't they think she was lazy?"
Dadi: "Perhaps some did. But she carried a great burden in her sleep - her husband's tiredness. Every hour he stayed alert, she absorbed his exhaustion."
Guddu: "That's such a sacrifice!"
Dadi: "And it had a crucial purpose. There's a warrior in Ravana's army named Meghnath - so powerful that he defeated even Indra! A prophecy said only someone who had conquered sleep could kill him."
Guddu: "Someone who hadn't slept?"
Dadi: "For fourteen years. Because Urmila slept, Lakshmana stayed awake. Because Lakshmana stayed awake, he could kill Meghnath. Urmila's sleep helped win the war!"
Guddu: "She was a hero too, just lying in bed!"
Dadi: "The most invisible kind of hero. When Ram returned to Ayodhya for his coronation, Nidra Devi came to Lakshmana: "Your vow is complete. Sleep now, so your wife may wake.""
Guddu: "She woke up after fourteen years?"
Dadi: "Just in time to see Ram crowned king. She had missed fourteen years of life - her husband's adventures, the war, the victory. But she never complained."
Guddu: "That's incredible patience."
Dadi: "This story isn't in the original Ramayana, beta - it comes from folk traditions. But it teaches something beautiful: sometimes service is invisible. Sometimes sacrifice happens in silence. Sometimes the most important support happens where nobody can see."
Guddu: "Like how you stay up when I'm sick, Dadi?"
Dadi: "*smiles* Something like that. There are people who carry our burdens quietly - parents, grandparents, friends. We don't always see their sacrifice, but we benefit from it."
Guddu: "I should say thank you more often."
Dadi: "That would make them very happy, beta. Every Urmila deserves to be remembered."
