Lalita Tripurasundari Defeats Bhandasura
— Brahmanda Purana, Lalitopakhyana —
Dadi: "Guddu beta, let me tell you the full story of Goddess Lalita's great battle - it lasted four days and included the most amazing divine warriors!"
Guddu: "Four days? That's a long battle!"
Dadi: "Against an enemy like Bhandasura, it needed to be! He had emerged from the ashes of Kamadeva, the god of love, after Shiva burned him. From those very ashes, a powerful demon took form."
Guddu: "So he was born from a god's death?"
Dadi: "Yes, and through intense penance, he gained terrible powers. Shiva himself gave him boons that seemed unbeatable."
Guddu: "What were the boons?"
Dadi: "Any opponent facing him would immediately lose half their strength! And he was guaranteed 60,000 years of unopposed rule."
Guddu: "That's why the gods needed someone new!"
Dadi: "When the gods performed the great fire ritual, Goddess Lalita emerged. But she didn't fight alone, beta. From her own body, she created an entire family of divine warriors!"
Guddu: "Who did she create?"
Dadi: "From her heart came Bala Tripurasundari - her daughter! From other parts of herself came the warrior goddesses Matangi and Varahi. And Lord Shiva manifested as her husband Kameshwara."
Guddu: "A whole divine family appeared!"
Dadi: "Lalita's army advanced on Bhandasura's fortress city of Shunyaka. The fighting was fierce! Bhandasura's thirty sons fought first - but Bala Tripurasundari, Lalita's daughter, defeated ALL of them!"
Guddu: "A daughter defeating thirty warriors!"
Dadi: "Then Matangi defeated Bhandasura's brother Vishanga. Varahi defeated the other brother, Vishukra. But before dying, Vishukra placed a magical trap - a yantra that paralyzed almost everyone!"
Guddu: "Even the goddesses?"
Dadi: "Most of them froze! Only Lalita, her daughter Bala, her husband Kameshwara, and Matangi and Varahi remained mobile."
Guddu: "How did they break the spell?"
Dadi: "Lalita and Kameshwara together created a new being - Maha Ganapati, the supreme form of Ganesha! He destroyed the yantra and freed everyone."
Guddu: "Ganesha was created during the battle?!"
Dadi: "And that's not all - they also created Maha Subramanya, the supreme Kartikeya! Both these powerful gods were born from necessity in war."
Guddu: "Bhandasura must have been desperate now!"
Dadi: "He pulled his most dangerous trick. He recreated every demon Vishnu had ever killed - Hiranyakashipu, Ravana, Indrajit, Kumbhakarna, all of them!"
Guddu: "All the demons from all the stories?!"
Dadi: "But Lalita had her own response. From her fingernails, she summoned all ten avatars of Vishnu! Each avatar faced and defeated the demon they had killed before."
Guddu: "Rama fought Ravana again? Narasimha fought Hiranyakashipu again?"
Dadi: "All of them! Can you imagine that battlefield - every epic battle from history happening at once?"
Guddu: "That must have been incredible to see!"
Dadi: "Finally, only Bhandasura remained. Lalita fired the Kameshwarastra - the weapon of her husband's power - and it not only killed the demon but completely burned his city to nothing."
Guddu: "Total annihilation!"
Dadi: "And with Bhandasura gone, love could return to the universe. Lalita revived Kamadeva from his ashes, reuniting him with his wife Rati. Harmony was restored."
Guddu: "So the goddess of beauty won by bringing back the god of love!"
Dadi: "The battle wasn't just about defeating evil, beta. It was about restoring what evil had destroyed. The goddess fought not from hatred but from love - love for the universe, love for balance, love for what should be."
Guddu: "War for love's sake."
Dadi: "Sometimes that's necessary. Now sleep, and may Lalita Tripurasundari watch over you with that same protective love!"
